Cord Blood Storage Offers Important Options for Families

Cord Blood Storage

Cord blood is taken from the umbilical cord once a baby has been born. This is done for the purpose of storing it in the event it should be needed for future health reasons. One of the main reasons for storing cord blood is to potentially offer additional health treatment options that might not be available without cord blood. Many parents are now even electing to collect stem cells from the placenta after birth due to the fact that it contains such a rich source of stem cells.

The process for harvesting placenta-derived stem cells is non-invasive and does not harm the baby or the mother. It is performed immediately after birth by the mother’s health care provider and then banked by a reliable cord blood bank. Arrangements should be made with the hospital as well as with a stem cell storage bank prior to the baby’s birth.
