The Advantages to Using a Cord Blood Registry
A cord blood registry or bank is a special facility that cryogenically stores cord blood, from which special transforming cells known as stem cells can be derived. The richest source of stem cells is in the blood of newborn infants. Though some forms of stem cell research have been controversial, LifebankUSA’s patented process is completely non-controversial, as the stem cells are derived from the placenta and cord blood, and makes the collection and storage easy and safe to both mother and child. At birth, the placenta and blood from the umbilical cord are collected and then stored in a process that takes about five minutes. Unlike most cord blood registry options, LifebankUSA only allows access to the placental and cord blood stem cells to family members when needed. Stem cells have been found to have healing properties that can treat medical diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, diabetes, and spinal cord injury.
