What Happens at a Cord Blood Bank?
A cord blood bank cryogenically stores cord blood, as well as placenta blood, which are both the richest sources of stem cells.. Stem cells are known to be self-replenishing and very adaptable cells that can assume a diverse range of specialized cell types. The process takes place at birth, takes an OBGYN less than five minutes to collect the cord blood, and is safe for both mother and child. This cord blood is collected by doctors and nurses (who are aware of your cord blood banking wishes) and then placed in a collection kit that is provided to the family by the cord blood bank provider. After the collection is complete, a courier picks the kit up from your bedside and takes it to the cord blood bank. Access to the cord blood is reserved for the banking family who may one day take advantage of this medical technology to save the life of one of its members.
