What is Cord Blood?
Cord Blood , also known as umbilical cord blood, is the blood that has been derived from a newborn baby’s umbilical cord . The blood is collected from the umbilical cord after the cord has been clamped. A patented process by LifebankUSA also extracts blood from the placenta, which provides more stem cells, than cord blood alone, that improves the potential for successful engraftment, and can as much as double the number of CD34+ stem cells, which studies show are the cells that matter most for treatment success and patient survival. From this point on the blood can be stored in a special cryogenic bank and later be used as a source of stem cells for transplantation. Though cord blood can be both publicly and privately banked, some companies, such as LifebankUSA reserve stem cell collections exclusively for family use. The safe and quick process of banking cord blood is a once in a lifetime opportunity to plan for the future health needs of your baby and family.
